This study explores the significance of watermarks as a vital tool for understanding the history of paper and manuscripts. It specifically highlights the meaning of religious symbols within these marks, which serve as evidence of the profound cultural and religious influence in Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. These symbols were not merely decorative elements; they carried significant cultural and religious meanings, offering a window into the beliefs and values of the societies that produced them.
In Islamic and Eastern manuscript collections in particular, religious symbols are frequently used to affirm the religious identity of the content or the person who used or made the paper, making them important tools in the field of Document science and cataloging. According to the research, studying these symbols contributes to our understanding of the history of paper and its manufacturing techniques, as well as the connections between literature, culture, and religious trade.
The Central Library at Salahaddin University in Erbil holds special importance as a source for this study, as it contains a valuable collection of manuscripts that have been examined. These manuscripts cover a wide range of fields, from religious sciences and dictionaries to history, medicine, engineering, astronomy, and more. Through a careful analysis of the paper in these manuscripts, evidence can be uncovered to help determine their origins. The study of the watermarks found on them is one of the primary methods used in this context.
