The Western Sahara issue in the light of Al-Ahram newspaper articles
in 1975 : Historical Study

The question of Western Sahara is regarded as one of the most intricate issues confronted by the international community in the aftermath of national liberation movements. It evolved into a subject of dispute and contention among several states, after having previously constituted a conflict with the Spanish colonial power. Consequently, the dispute came to involve Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, and the Sahrawi people.The newspaper AlAhram addressed this issue through sustained media coverage, elucidating both its official and popular positions. The articles indicate that Egypt supported and endorsed the legitimacy of Moroccan claims in Western Sahara, emphasizing that the issue represented a process of decolonization from Spanish rule. Furthermore, they affirmed the opinion of the International Court of Justice as a source of international legitimacy backing Morocco, and interpreted the Green March as embodying a new, non-military approach to conflict resolution.
The articles also highlighted Egypt’s support for the Tripartite Madrid Agreement, considering it as marking the termination of Spanish colo .
