Contributions of Arab and Muslim travelers to maritime sciences

This research highlights the prominent role played by Arab and Muslim travelers in the development of marine sciences during the Islamic eras. They contributed to building accurate scientific knowledge about the description of seas and their natural phenomena. Their work was distinguished by its reliance on direct observation and field experience, which made their writings the most famous and their books important sources for maritime navigation. They contributed to drawing advanced nautical maps and accurately describing coasts and islands. They also provided early information about the nature of seas, marine life, and coral reefs. Later civilizations benefited from these contributions, especially in the Age of Exploration, which demonstrates the pioneering role of Islamic civilization in the field of marine geography and navigational knowledge.
