US Policy Towards Post-Independence Belize (1981-1993)
Keywords:
United States of America, Belize, British colonialism, independenceAbstract
Belize's independence from Britain in 1981 was the starting point for the American presence in that country. The United States of America sought to help Belize achieve its independence from Britain, by supporting the Belizean cause since the sixties, and this was represented by the positive position of the United States of America in the decisions it took in favor of Belize in the United Nations. After that, bilateral relations developed on the economic and military levels, as Belize was a major source of sugar for the United States of America. In addition, the United States of America provided financial assistance to promote the economic development of the emerging country. The two countries also concluded a military agreement whose provisions included providing military and logistical support to Belize from the early eighties until the early nineties, in addition to tourism and reverse migration.
