The United States began contact with Bulgaria after the establishment of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in 1810. The Board's activity in Bulgaria was part of its overall activity in the Ottoman Empire. In 1819, the Board sent two of its missionaries, Pilny Fisk and Levi Parsons, to Smyrna. They focused their activities on education, and the commission was interested in gathering information about Bulgaria from its representatives there. Therefore, its scientific efforts did not begin until 1856, when it established a branch of its first mission to the Ottoman Empire in 1819, which opened its branches in 1858. Missionary efforts in Bulgaria varied has become the most important , including education, with the establishment of many schools between 1860 and 1863, as well as medical missions and charitable work studying the Bible, the Council's efforts culminated in the Ottoman authorities' recognition of the Orthodox community in 1870, which became the main basis for the Bulgarian national revival. They also managed to publish the Zornitsa newspaper, which moved to Philippopolis in 1902 and became the most important media outlet in Bulgaria and the Balkans.
