This study aims to analyze and criticize the interpretation of the Seljuk Islam by the British orientalist Andrew Charles Spencer Peacock in the works, Early Seljuq History: A New Interpretation and The Great Seljuk Empire. This study seeks to throw light on the foundations on which Peacock based his perception of the linkage between Seljuks and Islam, his understanding of Seljuks' contribution to the revival of the Sunni movement, their relationship with the Islamic schools of thought, the Islamisation of the Seljuks and the Turkmens, and the persistence of pre-Islamic beliefs in the Seljuk environment.
The study is analytical and critical because it explore the arguments of Peacock and compares them with the primary historical document and more current studies with relevance. It also deals with the consistency of the way in which Peacock has interpreted the document within the framework of the historical method. The study ends with a conclusion that Peacock provides an alternative interpretation for several well-known approaches to the study of Seljuk history, and provides food for thought for future discussion. Unfortunately, some of his conclusions raise methodological and evidential questions which need to be reviewed again in light of a wider range of historical sources and a more uniform use of historical analysis.
