This study examines the Jewish minority in Basra as one of the religious communities that formed part of the city’s social fabric. It focuses on its demographic, economic, social, and educational conditions during the first half of the twentieth century, a period marked by significant political and economic transformations beginning in the late Ottoman era and the British occupation, followed by the establishment of the Iraqi state in 1921. The study explores the demographic distribution of the Jewish population in the Basra Liwa and their areas of residence, as well as their communal organization and the rights they enjoyed within the framework of the Iraqi state.
Particular attention is devoted to the economic activities of Basra’s Jewish community, tracing their development from small-scale commercial activities to broader involvement in trade, import and export, money exchange, and the establishment of commercial companies and agencies. These activities included the trade of textiles, foodstuffs, grains, dates, automobile supplies, and building materials, in addition to their participation in the Basra Chamber of Commerce. The study also examines their involvement in agricultural lands and real estate and the financial, credit, and property transactions associated with these activities.
The study further addresses the educational conditions of the Jewish community in Basra, particularly the role of Jewish schools, foremost among them the Alliance School, their relationship with the educational policies of the Iraqi state, and their supervision by the Ministry of Education. Finally, it discusses the emergence of several associations connected with the Jewish community and Zionist activity in Basra during the 1920s. In doing so, the study seeks to illustrate the nature of the Jewish minority’s presence in Basra, the various spheres of its activity, and the transformations it experienced within the broader political, economic, and social developments that Iraq underwent during the period under study.
