rly sixteenth centuries represented a crucial turning point in the history of Central America. The discovery of the Honduran coast played a prominent role in consolidating Spanish influence within the region. These voyages came in the context of the frantic European competition to discover new lands and exploit their resources, in addition to the Spanish crown's endeavor to expand the scope of its empire outside the European continent. The successive exploratory campaigns contributed to paving the way for military conquest, which later turned into an organized colonial project aimed at subjugating the indigenous population and controlling economic resources. This continued until Honduras gained its independence in 1821. Spanish colonialism left deep effects on the social, economic, and political structure of Honduran society. The importance of studying this period stems from the fact that it represents a pivotal era in the political history of Honduras, which contributed to shaping the patterns of governance and defining the limits of power and the mechanisms for its exercise.
