The period between 1980 and 1990 witnessed a complex interaction in the Anglo-Turkish position on Arab and regional issues in the Middle East. The British position adopted a pragmatic approach that ensured the protection of its strategic interests in conflict zones without overt bias towards any party, calling for a peaceful settlement in accordance with UN resolutions, The Turkish position by its turn was characterized by a balance between Western alliances and its regional interests, which enabled it to play the role of mediator during the period of international détente.
