This study is premised on the assumption that a potential gap exists between the quantity and nature of media coverage devoted to government economic reform issues in economic talk shows and the actual level of audience knowledge regarding these issues. The study aims to understand the nature of media coverage of economic reform issues presented in Iraqi satellite television talk shows and to examine its relationship with the economic knowledge of audiences.
The researcher adopted the descriptive survey method. Data were collected using a questionnaire in conjunction with a measurement scale to survey audiences in the center of Baghdad, encompassing the following districts: Al-Rusafa, Al-Karkh, Al-Adhamiyah, and Al-Kadhimiyah. A multistage sampling procedure was employed, consisting of cluster sampling in the initial stage and purposive sampling in the final stage. The study sample comprised 400 respondents.
The study yielded several significant findings, most notably the following:
- The field study results revealed that the Iraqi News Channel's Dinar program ranked first among Iraqi satellite channels preferred by audiences for following economic talk shows. It recorded 392 responses, representing 98% of the sample, the highest percentage among all channels. Meanwhile, Kashf Hisab, broadcast on Iraq 24 Channel, ranked second with 384 responses, accounting for 96% of the sample.
- Both programs achieved the highest level of cognitive gratification through “enhancing knowledge of daily economic issues, topics, and events.” This category ranked first among respondents’ answers for both programs, recording 369 responses (92.3%) in Dinar and 369 responses (92.3%) in Kashf Hisab. These findings confirm that audiences rely heavily on these programs as primary sources of daily economic news and information.
