This research addresses currency counterfeiting in the Islamic Maghreb specifically during the Almoravid and Almohad eras. The study investigates the technical methods used by counterfeiters to target the "Almoravid Dinar" and the "Almohad Square Dirham." It also highlights the covert conflict between the Banu Ghaniya (Almoravid remnants) and the Almohads using counterfeiting as a weapon.
The Almoravid and Almohad dynasties marked a decisive turning point in the economic history of the Maghreb and Andalusia. The Almoravids relied on "Saharan gold" to mint a dinar that became the hard currency of the Mediterranean, while the Almohads built their monetary system on "silver" and the distinctive square coin shape.
in Marrakesh and the "secret mints" run by rebels and counterfeiters.
The study aims to compare how the Almoravids and Almohads dealt with the crime of counterfeiting, analyzing the strict measures taken by rulers like Yusuf ibn Tashfin and Yaqub al-Mansur to protect the currency, relying on jurisprudential records and economic history sources of that era.
