Cultural and intellectual life in the Prophetic era and the early Islamic period witnessed a radical transformation compared to the pre-Islamic era. Arab society transitioned from a culture based on oral tradition and poetry to one founded on divine revelation, science, and organized knowledge. The revelation of the Holy Quran was the foundation of this transformation, as it called for reading, reflection, and learning, contributing to the development of an intellectually aware society.
During the Prophetic era, which is closely linked to the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), new cultural features emerged, including the dissemination of the principles of monotheism, the combating of superstitions, and the establishment of ethical and scientific values.
The mosque, particularly the Prophet's Mosque, served as a primary center for education and learning, where study circles were held to teach the Quran, Hadith, and jurisprudence. Writing also became more widespread through the recording of revelation, and a number of scribes emerged, known as the scribes of revelation. In the early Islamic period (the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs), intellectual activity continued to develop. The Holy Quran was compiled into a single volume during the reign of Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him), and then copied and standardized during the reign of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him). Islamic sciences also expanded to include exegesis, hadith, and jurisprudence, and the beginnings of scholarly documentation began to emerge.
