The Stance of Al-Nahar Lebanese Newspaper on the Kurdish Issue

This study examines the position of the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar toward the Kurdish question in Iraq during the period 1972–1980—a decade marked by escalating Kurdish demands for autonomy and mounting tensions with the central government following the March 1970 Agreement and the subsequent collapse of peaceful negotiations. The research aims to analyze the newspaper’s coverage, trace its editorial stance on both Kurdish aspirations and Iraqi government policies, and explore how regional and international circumstances shaped its discourse, Employing a historical and critical content-analysis approach, the study investigates a representative selection of An-Nahar’s reports and commentaries, supplemented by relevant academic sources. The findings reveal that the newspaper offered extensive and relatively balanced reporting on negotiations and military developments, while at times reflecting Lebanese and broader Arab concerns over the potential disintegration of the Iraqi state and its impact on regional stability, The study concludes that An-Nahar’s discourse combined professional journalistic reporting with an implicit emphasis on Iraq’s Arab national dimension, making its coverage a valuable historical source for understanding Arab public perceptions of the Kurdish issue in the 1970s.
