شهدت العلاقات الاقتصادية بين بريطانيا وتركيا تحولاً نوعياً بفضل اتجاه أنقرة نحو تبني نظام اقتصاد السوق الحر والنمو القائم على التصدير فبعد شلل تجاري تام جراء أزمة شح النقد الأجنبي، تحولت قروض المساعدات والبرامج البريطانية إلى طوق نجاة مالي لإنقاذ البنك المركزي التركي من الإفلاس وتأمين السلع الأساسية وانعكست تلك الشراكة في نمو مطرد لحجم التبادل التجاري، محققاً فائضاً مستمراً لصالح الصادرات الصناعية والكهربائية البريطانية وفي المقابل، نجحت تركيا في إحداث ثورة في هيكل صادراتها أسواق بريطانيا.
