Abstract

The history of the South China Sea is characterized by complex interactions between maritime trade, territorial claims, and international tensions, significantly impacting international relations. As a vital sea route, the post-World War II period witnessed escalating tensions over maritime claims, primarily involving China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and several Southeast Asian nations. The People's Republic of China established the "Nine-Dash Line," asserting extensive claims over the South China Sea, a point of international contention. The South China Sea has also been a focal point of tension between the United States and China, with the US adopting a more assertive stance toward China's claims and activities in the region. The US has emphasized freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters, including increasing naval operations in the South China Sea to challenge China's expansionist territorial claims.
